Need to replace old, stained, stinky hall carpet.
Would like to pull up old, stained, stinky carpet in hall and replace with something that will be easy to clean up old dog's accidents. 1) after carpet is up, how do ... See more
If you are replacing the carpet anyway... go ahead and paint... the old carpet will act like the painters tarp... and catch any spills or drops.
Many houses from the 1950's have hard wood floors underneath the carpet and refinishing them... if they are in good shape will be well worth the cost. Area rugs or carpets can be put down to add interest or color... and to keep your feet warm in winter... then taken up in summer (clean before storing).
new baseboards will go down after painting walls, installing new carpet or after refinishing floors... paint or stain them, before putting them in... so you don't have to worry about masking them off to keep paint off walls, carpet or flooring. Then just touch them up after installation.
if you are planning to do messy work...do that first. if you are doing most of the house start with the rooms furthest from the exterior doors and work to the doors. that way you lessen the chances of dragging debre thru the new stuff.
Remove the popcorn ceilings first. I work from top down. All other suggestions are great too!
New carpet can be added without removing the baseboards. If you're talking about painting the baseboards then I'd paint baseboards before installing new carpet BUT after the old carpet is removed. Touch up if necessary.
Start at the top and work down.
Make sure you patch the walls before painting. It really makes a huge difference.
Thank you so much for your replies to me. Now I can see a plan, I was totally clueless!
