House ventilation

Ok its the night after Thanksgiving, the last couple of days have been beautiful, high 60's. We try to leave the house open as much as possible on days like this but with dogs that like to bark, they seem to get shut more often then we would like. Anyway, being its almost 70 degrees outside, our thermostat is set at 68 and its 81 degrees in our house. Im nit sure if its a ventilation problem, or what, any ideas what we need to check or do so the temperature is more comfortable?

Is it possible the thermostat is off enough to get that temp in the house, or do you get a lot of sunlight through the windows? That can bring up the temperature in the house a lot.

I have the same thing at my place...usually the temp you set is the min. Temp. Cooking, sun light can warm a room above that..when the night comes the rooms cool and it may kick in

Thermostat would not be the problem. Being balmy outside, sun beating down, home being insulated, the inside temp can rise up to 10-12 degrees higher than outside temp. Your setting of 68 degrees means furnace will not turn on until temp drops about 2 degrees below it. Consider how hotter a closed car gets inside above the outside temp. Opening windows (even a crack), have ceiling fans on, minimal use of heat generating appliances. Another thing to consider refrigerators give off heat to cool the inside, hot water heater gives off heat every time it turns on, running dishwasher gives off moist humid heat, washer and dryer give off heat. What I do is run my furnace with the fan on all year round. This balances the air circulation throughout the house.

Install a 2-speed ceiling fan to move the air around. Read the instructions, so you know how to adjust the airflow to up or down, it makes a difference in heating and cooling. Enjoy the nice weather, while it lasts!

All sources of heat could raise the thermostat including oven use, cooktop use, microwave use, dryer use, incandescent light bulb use, direct sunlight on the building and windows, body heat.

Fans in north facing windows at night should pull in cool air. Whole house fan might be a good idea too. Teach the dogs not to bark or relocate them to somewhere else in the house. Usually dogs only bark when bored or scared. Give the pups something to do. Do they have plenty of toys and chew bones? Do they get regular exercise?
