I got this at an online yard sale for 15.00 . It is in excellent shape , about 4 ft tall and the top is 3ft in diameter .

How old is it? It looks like it might be solid oak. Was the darker section of the pedestal perhaps part of the original table - with the lighter sections added to make it taller? (perhaps the original pedestal was damaged?) If it's solid, and in good shape, I'd add a couple of tall stools and use like an ice cream table. I usually try to avoid painting good wood.

Have fun with it! It definitely needs some paint and color to give it some interest. I like Jamala's idea with a stencil, too. Since its former life was in a bar, maybe you can carry that theme.

leave most of the wood ..add a stencil on top right on the wood...something light and faded....with some of the same color on pedestal etc. just a little..

Leave the base natural but polish it, paint the tabletop. A stencil on top would be a nice addition depending on your paint color. I would have suggested leaving it the way it is, but it seems to need something more, maybe to make it less pubby and more homey.

I would love to find something like this and do a mosaic top with a poured poly finish to put on the deck. The possibilities are endless!!! Keep us posted on what you decide to do and good luck!

It is oak and the finish is damaged from being in a bar or someone started to strip the pedestal since the flat parts show more grain and are lighter in color than the turned section. The pedestals are typically made from 6-10 separate long pieces of wood, edges mitered and then joined to resemble 1 large piece which is them put in a lathe and the middle section is turned. The feet are called 3 toe feet, somewhat similar to the ball and claw. My dining room and coffee table are the same style. A lot of these were made in the 1980s as reproductions of earlier pieces. Take the top off and look inside, the pedestal very well may have been cut to add the turned center piece to make it taller. I would use some sort of mosaic on the top and sand and paint the entire pedestal darker. Conversely darken the top and use chalk paint on the pedestal.

@Linda Krull What I am going to suggest is something that is either a little or a lot outside your box because the style I am going to suggest people either love it or hate it... That said... I would steampunk this table. I would either strip it to bare wood & stain it a very dark stain OR paint it black. I would then make several stencils of gears (different sizes) and use metallic paints copper, gold, & silver. Then around several different sections of the pedestal & just below the tabletop I would add some copper piping. On some of the flat parts of the pedestal you can add gears as well.

I would do a Mosiac top like C & S creations advised, that was my thought exactly !! You can get really creative with that..beach glass would be cool too..If you want to keep it bar themed, you can use beer bottle caps on top...I have a table like this too & it needs to be redone bad...I got alot of unfinished projects though...lol..

The base looks like a different style to the top - it seems a little thick and almost unfinished. That being said - and if you decide to paint.. I would do the thick areas of the trunk a darker color/shade tp recess a little. Any color paint, stain, milk or chalk paint would look good and depends on whether you are looking to keep it to go with your existing color scheme or sell it. Great entry table. I also like @Kayo Frazier's idea about adding gold or metallic paints as trim. Very popular this year.

If the top does have water stains, then I suggest painting at least the top. It does look to be in good condition, though, in which case I agree with others: polish it up some. My mother stenciled using gold leaf and some rather old-fashioned designs. If you go that route, be sure to pick designs that reflect your interests and home decor. I love whimsicial looks like Mary Engelbreit does. If you decide to go that way, a book I liked is titled "Mary Engelbreit: Crafts to Decorate Your Home." It was published in 1999 by Meredith Press. Sand the top, stencil a checker board on it, emblish the edges of the checker board with tear drop shape strokes, polyurethane. Put it on your front porch with a couple chairs and enjoy checkers or chess. :)

i love lauries idea i still need to do a checkerboard table myself something i always wanted to do this would be a great piece to do it on now ill be on the lookout for a table similar to this for mine my thought for this table was to paint a scene from a prohibition speakeasy on it
