RUSTOLEUM COUNTERTOP RESTORATION KIT

Paula Lanouette on Mar 26, 2014I redid my countertops with simple craft paint and polycrylic sealer - much less expensive than the kit version. I had old laminate countertops, covered them with 2 coats of Kilz, then faux painted them to look like granite with regular craft paint. Followed with about 7 coats of polycrylic (sand lightly between each coat). They look beautiful and no one knows I painted them unless I tell them. - You can choose how you want them to look by checking out samples of granite/,marble at the local home improvement store and then pick your paint colors, I used brushes, rags, and sea sponges to create the look). Good luck!Helpful Reply

Becky on Mar 26, 2014I also did my counters with paint but I used 5 coats of varathane floor finish and then 1 coat of "rock hard" which I got from amazon. I don't remember who makes it. I love them and they are holding up very well! And that's with 2 hungry teens, always in the kitchen! Lol.Helpful Reply

Caroline Hall on Mar 26, 2014I have painted many cupboards in rental properties & in my own homes; as well as other hard to maintain surfaces. I SWEAR BY Sherwin Williams BONDING PRIMER. It will create a primer unlike any other, resisting chipping, marring, & wear. As well, it will make paint/ finish stick like glue to hard to cover surfaces; I have used it on melamine (shiny bathroom panel), formica, plastic, those horrible metal doors that are like painting onto sandpaper. I even had cupboards made of masonite & the finish held for 7 years with NO chips (I sold the property @ 7 yrs). I used the BONDING PRIMER Sherwin Williams & Architectural line of cabinet paint. This IS THE STUFF to make your final finish last. Just rough up the surface lightly if it is a shiny surface (although you don't have to). Then paint it on. I like to use a foam roller if doing cupboards or doors, to ensure a smooth finish.Helpful Reply

Caroline Hall on Mar 26, 2014Sherwin Williams has since changed the name of the Bonding Primer... The closest match I have found in their updated product line is http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/products/catalog/primerx-peel-bonding-primer/?referringCategory=exterior-paint-coatings/primers/ Prime RX Peel Bonding Primer Another of the very best products from SW that I cannot live without when restoring is the All Surface Enamel Latex Base - it wears like iron on all finishes. http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/products/catalog/all_surface_enamel_latex_base/Helpful Reply

Penny Spencer Thompson on Mar 27, 2014Thanks for the answers, but I'm still hoping for more ideas. I need to do the countertops next. I am not "crafty" so painting a finish on them will not work for me. I was wondering if anyone ever used the countertop restoration kit from Rustoleum?Helpful Reply

Becky on Mar 27, 2014I have used the rustoleum countertop transformation kit. The one with the chips. I did my moms bathroom. I ordered it from amazon. It was the "small" size and covered 70 sq. ft. But was very easy and looks kind of like stone. It is VERY messy. Those little chips fly everywhere. I had my shop vac going which helped. Hope this helps :)Helpful Reply

Jan Munroe on Apr 07, 2015I used the quart of Rustoleum that is sold separated. It only comes in black and a nice sandy color. It was for a rental and looks fine. Don't know how it will hold up but the price is right, less than $30.Helpful Reply
