James A on Jul 07, 2011It depends on whether you have access. If there is an attic you would just install a box to the rafters above the hole you cut per manufacturer's instructions. There are a number of different types of boxes and mounting devices available. There are expanding mounting brackets that are tightened between joists but are recommended for use with lightweight lighting fixtures only.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Jul 07, 2011It is possible to due with minimal ceiling demo...provided you have access to power at a wall location that is in line with the ceiling joists. I did one of these a few years back and used a 4" hole saw to "cut" access points too run wiring. Patching these "holes" is pretty easy and straight forward. If you need to run wire perpendicular to the joist or wall studs the project becomes a 6 headed beast in no time. If you have attic access then the project is even easier still, as James mentioned.Helpful Reply

Pamella H on Jul 07, 2011Thanks for the advice. There's no attic access but there is power at the wall. Maybe I'll just stick to lamps!Helpful Reply

Dorothy Durbin on Jul 16, 2011Try a tall floor lamp that arches over your seating area. This will give you the overhead lighting you desire.Helpful Reply
