What should I do if anything to bring my gardenias back to life after this horrid winter?
My gardenias look terrible. I do not want to replace them, is there anything I can do?

  • Believe me I know the depression of this! I had a Gardenia that grew to over 5' in 3 years and now I have to prune it down to about a foot tall. I am so sad! First thing go out and take and scratch the bark at the base to see if it is green. If it is, then work your way up and when you do not find green that part is dead. Prune off the dead branches and start over again. I know, it stinks. But Gardenias can be very finicky. next year i am going to wrap mine if the winter turns out like this year. checking for green with your fingernail is important so you do not cut off green. use sharp pruners and clean them before you start and when you are done. Good luck and there may be some life under all that brown. Happy gardening

prune back until you hit live wood. Add some new soil/humus by breaking up soil at bottom of bush. Keep it watered,,hopefully it will recover. If there is any new growth of leaves, trim to that new growth. As long as the root is live, there is hope.
