Updating a chest with chalkboard slate.

We have an old chest that was made with odds and ends. The top looks as if it was made from 2 leaves of a table. It is now needing updating and we were thinking of cutting down a slate chalkboard and attaching it to the top. Any suggestions on how to go about doing this?

Have you considered using chalkboard paint? That may be easier than cutting down a chalkboard to fit. if you wanted to smooth out the top and make it one piece you might be able to use wood putty or bondo, sand it then paint with the chalkboard paint. Just a thought!

Whether you attach one or paint it on, you could also add trim pieces around it to give it a more unique & detailed look. Ready-to-paint decorative trim can be purchased at the big box home improvement stores. They can cut it to your dimensions. Add with liquid nails or wood glue.

I don't want to use chalkboard paint. Thanks for the suggestions though.
