3 Easy to Grow Bulbs for Early Spring Blooms

I've been so discouraged with the long cold winter. Here in NC we are about 3 or 4 weeks behind normal. I was delighted to go outside to my front garden bed and actually see a lot in flower. These three bulbs seem to always give me the best early show: daffodils, of course, tulips (my second year growing them), and hyacinths (in my garden for the first time this year.)All of them will naturalize and increase from year to year.
My front garden bed with all three bulbs in flower right now.
Daffodils are the first to flower for me each year.
My hyacinths were planted for the first time this year. What full and plump blooms!
These tulips remind me of my mother's garden in Maine. She always has a great stand of them each year. Mine are growing well the second year.
Easy to grow hyacinths, tulips and daffodils. See more pictures of them here:

Douglas Hunt on Apr 10, 2014I always have considered tulips difficult to perennialize. In fact, most seem to die out after a couple of years. But Cornell University actually did a three-year trial and found some tulip cultivars that do (at least in zone 5). Their list, which also includes daffodils, hyacinths and some other bulbs, is here: http://www.hort.cornell.edu/combos/howto/bulbsperennialize.htm
