Cher @ Designs By Studio C on Apr 10, 2014Yes, it should be sanded first because the paint may not stick to the polyurethane. Hope this helps!Helpful Reply

Debra Peters on Apr 10, 2014Roughing up the polyurethane will help the paint stick better. You will get a much nicer finish if you sand thoroughly. But, if you are looking for a "vintage" or "grungy" look, then sanding might not be necessary.Helpful Reply

Janet Smith on Apr 10, 2014Absolutely! And prime the furniture before you paint. Sand lightly after primer and between coats of paint for a truly professional finish!Helpful Reply
