Lavende on Apr 22, 2014If its a table you use frequently, and especially one that you eat and drink at, you'll want to varnish the tabletop. Brush on a polyurethane varnish to cover the top, let it dry, and repeat a few times to get a smooth, durable layer of protection for your chalk paint. You'll loose some of the rustic look of the texturing, but will have a functional table!Helpful Reply

Shari on Apr 22, 2014Yep, you definitely want to put some kind of protective coating at least on the top so spills don't penetrate and stain the paint. It will also give the flat looking nature of the paint some depth and luster. Although waxing is the typical way to finish off and protect chalk paint, I have read it is not the best way to protect dining table tops because heat from plates, casserole dishes etc., can soften the wax. Another alternative to using polyurethane or polycrylic that you might want to investigate is Miss Mustard Seed's Hemp Oil (which was designed for wood and milk paint but can also be used on chalk paint). http://www.missmustardseedsmilkpaint.com/hemp-oil/ Once hemp oil cures (after approximately 30 days), it protects and wears beautifully whereas wax will break down and emulsify with any exposure to heat. If you think you would be interested in using hemp oil and do not have a Miss Mustard Seed distributor close to you, I have ordered from this distributor who offers free shipping on MMS products. http://shop.robynstorydesigns.com/miss-mustard-seeds-milk-paint-free-shipping-page-2/Helpful Reply
