Carpet stains

Does anyone know how to get tar stains out of carpet? I have tried the Woolite carpet cleaner but it only got a little up. There are only about 4 small stains because my husband stepped in something in the driveway and tracked it on the carpet. It could be dried oil since I haven't had any tar around my home?

    WD-40, carb cleaner, brake fluid...
  • Lighter fluid for oily stains-use a white or non colored cloth and dab on. Then there is always calling in Stanley Steemer or other reputable company and having the carpets cleaned and they have some awesome removers!

I've used this method on a number of different stains, including black shoe polish on a white shag rug. Put Dr Bronner's magic soap (or any other CASTILE soap) full strength on the stain, cover with a clean white towel (don't apply pressure, it's just so no one steps there) and let sit for an hour, After an hour take a soft toothbrush and lightly brush the soap in a circular pattern, add more soap if necessary, but don't go overboard or it'll be heck to get out. blot with the clean towel, add some baking soda and brush again, spritz a LITTLE water and brush again, add more water and blot with another clean towel, allow to sit for another hour or so. Continue this pattern until the stain is nearly gone. Then spray undiluted white vinegar onto the stain and continue to blot with clean towels until there is no residue left. Be sure to allow to dry for at least 24 hours before vacuuming or walking on it I leave a dry towel over it to remind everyone to stay off. after vacuuming brush with a clean soft toothbrush to restore the nap. This has worked on every stain I've ever tried it on except one that was a 5+ year old mystery stain. OH and btw I own a cleaning company and have access to lots of products, but this always works and it's safe to use around children and pets.

Use 1/4 cup of white vinegar, 1 tbsp. of Dawn dish soap, and fill with water. Spray area liberally and let soak for 5-10 minutes and then proceed with blotting with a clean, dry towel until stain is removed. Some carpet stain removal products can be of great benefit for combating many types of carpet stains.
