Which paint gun to use for furniture

I have used a Husky HVLP and standard paint gun for painting furniture, and neither works. The first one started dripping condensated water, and was not made for latex paint anyway. The second one used a tremendous amount of paint, and didn't spray fine enough for furniture, but really sloppy and messy.
Can anybody tell me the best paint sprayer to use for furniture (latex and chalk paint applications)?

I've painted in excess of 30 pieces of furniture with latex paint using a basic Wagner (Control Spray Plus) airless sprayer that I paid about $100 for some 6-7 years ago and I've been really happy with it. Occasionally, I will have a little trouble getting it primed but once it gets going, man, it's great. One thing I discovered early on, it does require the paint to be thinned down quite a bit in order for the paint to flow smoothly. I believe all the newer models look different but I'm attaching a picture of what mine looks like.
  • The best system is a old style cup gun with high quality compressor. You must have a air separator on the line or you will get condensation in the paint. a HVLP such as the one Shari is speaking about can be used as well. The real trick to this is proper thinning of the paint being applied. Most people that paint furniture use lacquer type paints anyway. The latex paint that people use for cabinets are applied using an airless system and if you look up close to the final finish you will see it has a lot of orange peel in the finish. You need to understand that latex paint is water based and when you thin it enough so it can be atomized you need to apply several coats to build up the finish. If you try to cover it just a few coats it will run and not look very good.

Thank you. I have never heard about an air seperator. Where do i get that?
  • ops I should have said moisture separator. You can find them at HD or any good quality paint store that sells compressors and paint equipment.
