Using self leveling acrylic gel

I'm at the tail end of redoing a table (a wedding anniversary gift) that's very important for me to do right. The top has a map of their honeymooning spot, all cut out, attached to the top, and painted with an edge. I'm wanting to put acrylic on the top but I'm totally intimidated by the procedure. If I ruin it, I will cry a lot.....seriously.
Has anyone used this stuff, does it work, and how do I go about starting it this scary project? BTW, the map is already glued to the top of the table already. Will that be a problem?

I don't have any tips, but I did want to say how adorable this is, and that I love the colors you've used.

What about a piece of glass cut to fit top?

Hey Karon, That's exactly what I did. I had a bad gut feeling about pouring (brushing) acrylic gel on top and risk ruining the entire table. I've never used the stuff and was so unsure of how it would turn out. I didn't have the confidence to go thru w/it. Thanks for your comment. I'm glad to have come to the same solution you'd suggestion.
