Kathy Steger on May 10, 2014I had the same thing pop up out of the blue on the side of my house and it got very tall..I asked our local master gardner and I was told it was actually a weed..so I pulled it out (deep roots) and it has not come back since! It became quite a conversation piece with neighbors trying to guess what it was! For a weed it certainly was interesting looking,,,Helpful Reply

Peggy Davis on May 10, 2014I inherited these in one of my flower gardens. They don't bloom until full summer. they grow very tall (like almost shoulder height). The flowers are very interesting and come back every year due to seed. I don't know the name of them. The flowers are quite beautiful even though they look alien!Helpful Reply

Trisha on May 10, 2014I was going to say it was a weed also. I had several of them pop up in my flower bed last year and because they looked like they might be something I let it go. Eventually they got a tiny yellow flower that looked very similar to a dandelion. I pulled them once I saw that. LOLHelpful Reply

Lisa D on May 11, 2014The plant in the center of the photo is a coneflower, blooms pinkish-purple flowers that attract wild canaries, wrens and other wild birds. It will bloom til frost, heat tolerant and is a perennial in zone 5, not sure about your area. You can dig it up and divide it to get more, it will also multiple on its own. I have had them grow to a height of 3' or more.Helpful Reply

Gwen Duncan on May 11, 2014peonies have smooth leaves...its coneflower. A perennial. also called Echinacea. Coneflowers will also propagate and spread like crazy. If planted from seed it will take 1-3 years to bloom, but they love full sun. Usually about 2-3 ft. tall full grown, But SOOOO pretty!.Helpful Reply
