Mod Podge alternative?

Has anyone ever used polyurethane as decoupage adhesive instead of Mod Podge? I have a large item to cover and Mod Podge is pricey. I've heard of the homemade Mod Podge but also heard that it was not quite as durable. Any suggestions out there??

I have used wall paper paste to cover the inside of an old trunk. Worked really well and drys clear. I didn't want the paper to have a sheen on top, like Mod Podge has a tendency to do.

  @Donna Byram Thanks. I need it for a large table for kids so I don't think I'd mind a little shine.

  @Donna Byram There is Matte mod podge..there are all kinds of mod podge, even one that aids in transferring designs and one that leaves an antique look.

A water-based polyurethane would be just the thing to use. If you recoat over the decoupage that will make it more durable.

  @Darla Thanks. I'm gonna give it a try. I'm going to try polyacrylic though because I was told it wouldn't yellow over time. Plus...I have some!

  Cindy when I am doing the leather look with Kraft paper I use poly acrylic...it is very durable...when it dries you cans and it nice and smooth. I think I have some instruction on this technique on my fb Painted lady by Barbara Boyles

I've used polyurethane over the decoupage after I glued it down well first. It takes 8-10 coats to build up the desired depth, but once it is done, it will last forever.

Cindy when I am doing a leather look with Kraft paper...I use poly...you can pick this up in rolls at Home Depot I think it is called contractors paper...this is very durable and sands out nice and smooth after it dries...I think I have instructions on my fb Painted lady by Barbara Boyles

  @Barbara Boyles Thanks for the info. I did a Kraft paper leather treatment on a table but used Mod Podge to adhere the paper and then finished with the polyurethane. I've decided to do the whole process with the poly. It's going to be an antique world map and Kraft paper. Keep your fingers crossed!! Thanks again.
