it has 5 petals, narrow at base, long stem, generates from pod.

It is Hibiscus, I have a red one just like it. It will go to seed and you will get new plants to share with friends. I planted other flowers in front of it because it does get leggy.

Also known as swamp hibiscus here in Florida because it occurs naturally in wet areas.

swamp hibiscus here in Georgia. you can even grow it in a pot, I usually put it in one with no drainage hole so the soil is always moist
