moss grows where there is lots of shade,,,poor soil, and little grass.. MOSS OUT FOR LAWNS will get rid of it, when it turns brown you have to rake it out. a long hard process.. You need to sweeten the soil by adding SOIL SWEET,,1-2 times a year....... it changes the PH which the moss doesn't like.. ONCE you have gotten rid of the moss. you will need to add good soil, and reseed to prevent new weeds and moss fromo taking over again....its a never ending battle in some areas... mine included....

I'm sorry about the moss but I really like the ring of hosta around your tree. There are so many. How many plants did you start with?

@Joffler Hostas multiply like crazy! You can actually go out and bend down to the ground the dried stalks with the seeds on them, sort of push them into the ground (don't stomp them to death) and next year you can separate them and keep adding to your supply. You can take one of those disposable baking pans (like for lasagna) put in a few inches of soil, sprinkle seeds off your hosta thickly, cover with a thin layer of soil, keep moist and they will sprout! I am making a "Hosta Waterfall" on a down slop toward the house...I am about worn out working on it so it will be finished this fall with "seeds on the ground"! I will cut off the dried seed stems and place them where I want hostas!

Before you get rid of the moss, make sure grass will actually grow there. It it's under a tree and you get less than five hours of full sun, grass doesn't really stand a chance.

@Douglas Hunt Douglas is right. I would suggest you do a soil test before adding any amendments. Your local extension office (listed in the phone book, under gov't) can provide you with a kit and directions on how to use it. Once gathered you can send your kit to your state lab for testing, there is normally a nominal fee for that service (here in VA it's $10) they will send you back a detailed analysis of your soil along with recommendations for both the kind and amount of amendments you need.

I find moss in my lawn charming. If you can't get rid of it or replace it easily, learn to love it!

My hubby who use to be in the landscaping business said to use lime on the moss. It will not hurt the grass.
