Gardening Has No Rules but Those Set by Mother Nature

Many of us have a different view of what gardening is or isn’t. I know from experience that there are many people out there who will tell you that you are wrong or that it will not work because that is not what the book says. When someone tells me “you cannot grow roses next to an Oak tree or you need to amend the soil”, my first reaction is to pull out my pictures of my yard and say “really?”
I am here to say again: gardening has no rules that are found in a book. Gardening is about passion and the commitment to work with Mother Nature to grow and nurture your garden. Sure, you will have bad experiences where a plant will not thrive but how to truly grow a plant is not found in a book-it is in your heart. Gardening is in a balance of nature and man that we are able to grow beautiful flowers, shrubs, and trees. The rules of zones and sunlight are not man made rules and therefore you have to work within guidelines of what nature says…

I do not have "good soil". I have VA red clay soil in 3/4ths of my yard and in most areas there are river rocks about 4" down so digging can be quite challenging but that does not stop me... and should not stop you...
Going into 2nd season for the 'rescued' rose bush next to the Oak tree. I am not a rose person but I could not let the neighbor throw it out.
this area is under 2 60' Oaks and the ground is hard. Great for variegated euonymous which is spreading and filling in this area along my many galvanized pots and antique wheelbarrow to add some color and whimsy. I had to surrender and work with this area.
Early pic of my shade garden-using various plants of heights, color, leaf shapes gives it such a cool look. Sometimes I underestimate what a plant will do but that is okay because i like the overlap

My garden is full of things that are not supposed to grow so close to the beach (and of the bones of things that are not supposed to grow so close to the beach and really don't). You never know until you try.
    • Gardening has a learning curve and sometimes I look up the country and environment of origination of the plant to help me better understand. Working with nature And her rules guarantees more success.

I always say you can try, but you can never control nature. I’m so glad I’m not one of those people who gets frustrated by every weed (I’ve had my moments don’t get me wrong ha) or wants to destroy the natures gifts (people who spray fungicide on their lawns in the Pacific Northwest ??? I understand on a veggie garden (though id never) ? But a lawn? It is just an endlessly frustrating pursuit that gets nowhere because nature always wins. Instead I love to identify the weeds and learn about them and see how I can use them. Nature and I work together because we are the same thing anyway
