Putting Aquatic Plants in a Water Fountain Planter

Our water fountain is lovely but it doesn't have drainage holes in the planter sections (for obvious reasons). This means that when it rains those sections fill with water, drowning the plants.
That's why we have added aquatic plants to the water feature this year, top-dressing them with gravel and letting them enjoy the elements. They love it!

Here they are not long after being planted. They have now settled into their surroundings and the fountain, plants and gravel all look great. We have had a couple of downpours since it was all planted up and they have all coped admirably.
In fact the plants have flourished so I must have done something right! The plant in the top section - the smallest section of the three - looked to have died to begin with. But it has recently come 'back from the dead' so to speak!
Here it is with a dose of slug pellets to ward off the slimy little critters that ate it to begin with. It's about three times this size now, so almost back to the size it was when we bought it! Onwards and upwards...

Allison Whitehead on May 29, 2014Thank you Douglas! Yes it has taken a couple of years to really bed in and get the fountain to look at its best but I think we've finally achieved it...
