Melisa Gingrich on May 30, 2014I suggest General Gel Stain. I just refinished a bench and it is beautiful! You don't have to strip the old stain you just paint on and wipe off the new stain, however many coats until you have the color you want. Here's the video explaining the process. BTW, I don't sell this stuff, just a big fan of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIPJBi2ECeMHelpful Reply

Michele Eures on May 30, 2014I think it would be hard to get the one that shows the grain smooth enough because of all the grooves on it. So you could do a crackle finish on them and they would both have a textured finish.Helpful Reply

Phyllis Erstad-Girten on Oct 25, 2016Sand very well until very smooth. Then apply a good quality primer such as kilz to prevent bleed through. Let dry thoroughly and then apple a good quality paint in semi gloss (2 coats) . Let dry very thoroughly between and be sure to thin the paint. Better to put two thin coats on, dries better and gives a smoother coat. Sand down any rough spots in between coats. This should fix your problem.Helpful Reply
