Kathy Rick-Altschuler on May 31, 2014sand down the wood to smooth. at this point you need deside if you want to paint stain or stay natural. if you go natural use tung oil. soak the piece. let it dry. the more oil the darker the stain. now if you want you can use tompsoms water seal at his point. if you paint or stain remove all the dust from the wood with a damp rag. wipe pc at least 3 times any ruff places sand and and wipe again. let dry and apply paint of stain. if using stain use gloves, damp clean rag. if you need a place to test stain color use the inside drawer front. DONT use a stain and poly combined. do it in two steps stain then seal.. if stain is to dark before you do a large area. you can lighten it by spraying the wood with water wipe off excess. and stain. it will keep the stain from pentrating the wood so deep. this treatment works best on soft poris wood such as pine. if you paint us a foam brush and wrap it in foil put it in the freeze and you can use it another day without cleaning. i have done this with regular paint brush it worked well also. those are my tips good luck.Helpful Reply
