Oil,Electric, or Natural gas for an older home??????
I have a 7 year old Payne PA13 electric A/C unit, in theattic, which gives the house air conditioning through the ceiling vents.
The boiler will need replacing at some point in the nearfuture. My questions are:
1) Replace with same – new oil fired boiler?
2) Replace with a gas boiler? A gas line would need to be installed.
3) Replace existing electric A/C unit in attic withelectrical A/C and Heating unit? Install
anelectric hot water heater in space where boiler is now.
4) Replace existing electric A/C unit in attic with a gasA/C and Heating unit? Install a
gashot water heater in space where boiler is now.
5) What about a tankless hot water heater (gas or electric)?
We do not plan to sell (it’s my family home) and ourchildren will want the house in the future. Based on the long term, which wouldbe a better choice? Any unbiased directives, thoughts, and advice would begreatly appreciated.
Thank you!!!

Darla on Jun 01, 2014I would go with an all-electric choice if you can - gas is a little scary and heating oil prices are horrible now and going up. You could even put up some solar cells for things like lights and fans that don't take a lot of juice.Helpful Reply

Carol on Jun 01, 2014Gas is the least expensive fuel for home heating. Gas companies compete for your business so you can select the one with the best prices offered to you. Go gas!Helpful Reply

Catherine Smith on Jun 02, 2014I would go with gas, we heat and cook with propane. And do checkout the tankless hot water heaters. We had one installed a year ago and cut our propane bill almost in half. Plus it's wonderful to have hot water almost instantly.Helpful Reply
