What should I do?

Chris aka monkey on Jun 07, 2014@Mrs. D i like your bathroom and painting tile is a real chore..i think if you had some gold tones it would offset the mustard things like a vase or some hand towels and maybe small pics on wall with gold frames put enough in the room to be noticed without cluttering and have fun xxHelpful Reply

Merry_sherri on Jun 07, 2014I used black and cream toile accessories to offset the mustard and it worked really well (with black and cream linens). Navy would also be an excellent choice to tone it down and a it's always a classic look.Helpful Reply

Pamela Sandall on Jun 07, 2014The best way to make a color disappear is to add to it. I would pick a color close to the tile and paint the walls. Paint the cabinetry to a crisp white. Depending on your style goal, bring in accent color(s) with accessories and wall art. If you're going for country/french country (which could work with the fleur de lis tile) you might even add white frames around the mirrors. You could accent with black or with a french blue (depending on your style). If you want to make it more modern, grey is great with yellow. bring in a modern grey and white and yellow combo for the shower curtain and accessories.Helpful Reply

Z on Jun 08, 2014Is this the main bathroom, or the masterbath? If the main bathroom, then the sky is the limit. My first thought was similar to Pamela's, by turning the yellow into a neutral of sorts. My favorite color combo with yellow is to add both blue and green. Yellow goes with almost any color, so try your favorites by heading to the paint store and grab a bunch of paint chips to bring home and play around with.Helpful Reply

Donna Nissani on Jun 08, 2014I would lose the flouncy white shower curtain and the plastic flowers . . . . simplify, simplify, simplify! The navy blue idea suggested earlier as well as the idea of painting the cabinets white would really make the whole bathroom look fresh. What kind of floor do you have? Navy colored rugs and a white and navy shower curtain would set the whole bathroom off!Helpful Reply

Nancy Prejean on Jun 08, 2014Yes I would paint the cabinets a white tone. And would get a colorful shower curtain and keep it closed when not in use. Add a rug. Blues and grays go well with the yellow.Helpful Reply

Marion Nesbitt on Jun 08, 2014I LOV YOUR BATHROOM. The colours are right on and nicely balanced. Please don't paint the cabinets - the dark is needed to help ground the room and offset the gold and white. If you want some accessory colours, think safari! --- mossy green, tans, or a couple of animal print towels, or rug, picture of savannah, lion, or whatever. I have shower curtain rings that are lion heads. There is also lovely amber-coloured glass accessories on dark bases such as soap dishes, etc. I'd replace the vase and dainty flowers with something more earthy toned and with grassy type artificials like spikes etc.. I'd also replace your tie backs with thicker type drapery ones with tassles so they are more in scale with your substantial curtains.Helpful Reply

No longer available on Jun 08, 2014Gray looks great with mustard yellow and is a very current color combination. White looks great with it, but so does a touch of black or dark navy. If you do an internet image search for "yellow and gray bathrooms", you'll get lots of ideas that I think could work well with your tile.Helpful Reply

Shari on Jun 08, 2014The answer to this question really depends on what style(s) and color(s) you like and what your vision is for the bathroom, decor-wise. You've already received a lot of good suggestions and there are lots of other options if you decide to work with the tile, as is. One of my bathrooms has old golden/mustardy yellow tile (but only around the tub). I really didn't like it at all but decided to embrace it and the ugly terracotta tiles on the floor until I could afford to rip everything out and replace it. My "temporary fix" was to decorate it in sort of a "French Country" style using blue and black as accent colors to the yellow. Although the walls were already yellow when we looked at the house, it was a lemony yellow and did not blend well with the golden color of the tile so I repainted in a pale golden yellow. (Hard to see the difference in the pictures.) French Country mixes different prints so I used a blue & white toile print shower curtain and a ticking stripe valance on the window. I added black wrought iron pieces and painted the basic builder grade vanity and mirror/medicine chest black. It's been 4 1/2 years since we bought the house and I'm actually pleased enough with the cosmetic changes I've made in this bathroom that I'm really not all that anxious to rip and replace the tile and floor now.Helpful Reply

Amy on Jun 10, 2014I agree with painting similar to that color but gray and white go nice with yellow as well. Good luck!Helpful Reply

Gaela Ake Fisher on Jun 14, 2014I had that exact same yellow tile when we bought our house. I found a really nice green that coordinated with it, and accented with chocolate brown. It turned out really well.Helpful Reply
