How to Make a DIY Barn Quilt (with Supplies Around the House)

I started doing research on barn quilts late last year when we moved a 100-year-old barn to our property to rebuild. Since I’m a (novice) quilter, I love the idea of hanging a quilt square on our barn.
These are pretty common in the Midwest where I live. It feels very rural Americana and I love that you can choose a square that tells a story.
It was a pretty simple (and inexpensive), project. But the result is a graphic piece that's perfect for our red barn. And because I had everything in the barn, I didn't spend a dime!
After cutting the board and painting, I used painter's tape around the edges for a clean frame. Then I did some simple measurements with pencil and a ruler for the intended design.
I simply colored by numbers.

Find out more about the simple steps. I've also shared some tips to make the process quick and simple.

What is the best clear coat you can apply to your barn quilt once the project is complete. Weather is harsh and I feel one more layer of protection is worth it after all, a lot of work goes into creating a barn quilt
