These came up last fall and were orange-ish and plentiful. What kind are they?

My guess would be Omphalotus illudens, the jack o'lantern mushroom.

@Douglas Hunt Thanks. I did Google them and decided they must be jack o'lanterns but when showing the pictures to other people I got conficting opinions. Some thought they were edible but of course, I didn't try them. Didn't notice a smell.

You can see them and read about them yourself by going to Google images and searching for "species of mushrooms". You'll see them like me and then can research more. They are down about one page toward the left. NOT EDIBLE. >> parasitic honey mushrooms Honey Fungus (Armillaria mellea, Armillaria ostoyae, etc)

@Tam I did research them at the time, but like I said to Doug, some people thought they were something else that were edible. Didn't take any chances.

If they are on an Oak tree, they are what we call "Chicken Mushrooms" which are editable. they do taste like chicken, (no joke) The other orange/yellow ones are poisonous.

Years ago, some people stopped and asked if they could pick our "goldies" mushrooms and since we didn't know what they were and hadn't noticed them we said ok. We have mostly oaks around here and nothing seems to come up in the same place year after year. Wish morels were as prolific as these questionable ones.
