Tools Recommendations

Now that I am doing more and more work with furniture, it is time to buy some new tools. The ones at the top of the list are a planer and a drill press. I am looking for recommendations (or warnings) about particular brands. Nothing too insignificant for this investment. (Thanks in advance!)

I don't remember off the top of my head what the brands are on all our tools, but our table saw and drill press are both Craftsman and have been excellent tools. We do not have a planer. Yet. ;^)

Wow. If you don't have a Kreg Pocket Hole Jig, you're missing the boat. I also love my Craftsman table top jointer. I have the Dewalt planer, too, and love it. A Dewalt oscillating sander? How 'bout a table and compound mitre saw? I have both, Craftsman. It just turned out that way, though, I don't have any brand loyalty. I also bought a B&D impact driver that has interchangeable heads. Router, oscillating, reciprocating, circular & jig saw. 2, 20volt lithium batteries. This baby has been invaluable and sooo easy to use! I love this thing. I hope that helps. I can't think of things I've used in my cabinet building. and I'm too lazy to get up right now. :) Good luck!

@Christine, sounds like you got a great deal with all the tools! ;^) My hubby and I both love woodworking. I'm always talking him into buying more tools. We have one Kreg joiner tool, but I want more of their tools.

I have a Rigid miter saw, a Dewalt table saw, use Black and Decker cordless drill, Skil circular saw, Dewalt cordless drill, Milwaukee reciprocating saw, Stanley router, don't remember what the belt sander is, Black and Decker jig saw, Craftsman pressure washer, and on and on... Best to do a consumer search as to which brand is rated best for the product you're looking for. Then, you can find refurbished stuff online as well. Scratch and dent is another option, Sears sometimes has stuff available, although hard to find online. You have to visit their service shop to see.

Julie Its been a while since your post so you may have already bought all your tools but if not here is some advise. First determine which tools you will use a lot and which you will only use occasionally. No need to buy industrial quality tools if you are not going to use them a lot. Tools that you will use constantly like your battery drill or a miter saw should be of a better quality. Harbor freight is a good place for measuring tools or squares as they come with a life time warranty but don't buy cordless tools there because their batteries don't last.. I bought a 12 inch planer there because I don't use it a lot but I paid $1500 for an industrial quality Mikita miter saw over 20 years ago because I use it almost daily. Hope this helps.
