How to Hide Wood Grain on Cabinets

When we moved into our new house I knew one of things I wanted to do was redo the cabinets but I wanted to do it without hurting our pocket books. Here is how I made our cabinets go from drab to fab!
I wanted to change my lower cabingets to be white and eventually change out my up cabinets for open shevling which I love!
To get started I sanded down all of the cabinet bases, to get the top layer of gloss off.
I contacted 3M to see if they had any product that might work and I ended up with Bondo Home Solutions Wood Filler
I worked in small sections at a time, applying with a Bondo spreader.
When I had finished applying the product to all the cabinets, we let it dry over night. The next day we sanded all the cabinets down again, in preparation for priming them.

Anna did you do all this just to hide the grain? Do you know for sure that a good primer and paint wouldn't have hidden the grain? I have to assume there was a special reason, that's a heck of a lot of work. Did you want to end up with a smooth glass like finish on the cabinets so it didn't look like wood? Just wondering, but looking forward to seeing the finished result.
