USMC wood footlocker repair

I would really like to restore this to be a great conversation piece. Would be my first time trying to restore something. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Was gifted this treasure from one of my son's friends. I'm still not sure what I wanted to do with it. After I peeled off the 70's contact paper,
Then it revealed this. The wood footlocker has some damage to it due to moisture. The plywood is cracked, peeling and separating on the exterior. How do I fix this and restore it? I really don't want to cover up its history.

Remove the paper, cut a piece of 1/4" plywood to fit the top. Sand, stain, and seal. If it were me and I were keeping it for my home, I would add an applique' to the top or stencil on something cool, and seal it well with varnish. (does anyone say varnish anymore?). It can then be used for virtually anything from a coffee table (add a piece of glass to the top), bedside table, or very interesting shoe keep inside the front hall or in a foyer.

If you are trying to preserve the integrity of the piece, use some wood filler (color match the wood) on the cracks. They don't seem to be very big. I can't see them from the picture. Use a glue remover for the tape, and stain the wood how you want. Nice gift!

Use mod podge to seal prints of old maps all over surface. Matte not shiny Mod Podge. OLD sheet music or book pages, travel posters, would be interesting to decoupage as well!
