Can I save this shrub? And what kind is it?

Does anyone know what kind of shrub this is? It was the fourth wheel on a party of three (pictured bottom right), and we tried to burn it, but it was too green. Decided to keep it after all, but now it is not growing leaves (poor thing). The leaves pictured are growing off of a stump that I had cut back right next to the shrub, but I can't tell if it is part of the same shrub system or not (we moved in to find mix and match shrubs in the back yard). One of the leaves looks somewhat like poison ivy, but since it is attached to the shrub base, I know that can't be!

I think the shrub is probably dead, what's growing looks like Kudzu.

Cut it back until you see live wood, if any, and don't set fire to it again!

Thank you both! So we need to trim it way back then, right? And we won't set fire again!

Yep, as doug said cut it back. When I moved in to my home the previous owner let all the shrubs go. I cut everything back within 8 in of the ground. Now they are coming in nicely and I am shaping them early on.

I don't think it is alive. What's growing from base might be Kudzu. To test for life cut it back a few inches at a time. When you find green wood stop and let nature take its course. It couldn't hurt to dig around it and add some garden soil to dirt. They appear not to be in a bed so it might need some more nutrients.
