I'm a single lady and would love to have some bead board in my home but don't have the money to pay someone to do it. How hard is it to do-it-yourself? Does anyone have some good hints about installing it so it doesn't look like I did it myself :)

You can use screws or construction glue to attach the beadboard, but to make it look good you have to trim out the edges with molding and caulk the cracks. The beadboard wallpaper is a good idea.

@Donna4, well it's almost impossible to hang bead board by yourself. They come in 4x8 sheets. They arnt heavy but bulky. So when you go to install them, your gonna need a second pair of hands. If you can get someone to just help hold in place while you attach them that would help you. But as far as the hanging of them. It just takes a drill and measuring out your stud locations. Now if your just doing the wainscotting, it would be easier for you to use the slat boards and hang individually. Depending how tall you going with the wainscotting or to the ceiling. You can purchase 1/2 x 1 1/2 x about 8 ft. long boards and nail them about 12 inches apart to give it a batting board look. Which looks really cool. And these you wont need anyone to help you with. But when your done with all of them. Go back and chalk each side of the board, start at top and end bott. This way when you paint them, it will appear as its real batting board. Just some ideas, hope it helps, good luck

I do also believe there are wood "slats" you can buy that can make the appearance of beedboard, you may also be able to find a woodworker in your city who can make the beadboard slats for you if you buy the wood.

Lowe's sells beadboard planks in 8 ft. lengths that are about 4-5 inches wide. It comes packaged. It is easy for one person to install, and it is tongue and groove. Easy to use. I used some on this project for the sides. You can use a small paneling nail, or brad nail gun or glue.

I highly recommend you consider paintable beadboard wallpaper. I love beadboard but my husband hates carpentry projects. Beadboard wallpaper is a win-win for both of us. I get the look of beadboard and he doesn't have to do carpentry! If you you think you would be interested in going the beadboard wallpaper route, just be forewarned, not all beadboard wallpaper is created equal. I only use the Graham & Brown version because, in my opinion, for what it's worth, it is the most realistic I have seen. I've used it in many applications throughout my former and current homes (including applying it to furniture) and it has repeatedly fooled even the most experienced remodeling contractors who have been in my homes working on other projects. No one can believe it's really wallpaper until they actually touch it. Not only is it very realistic, it is super easy to work with. Home Depot used to carry the Graham & Brown brand online but they (and Lowes) are now carrying a cheaper looking version instead. However, another HomeTalk member, Rhoda V. sells the Graham & Brown version here: http://southernhospitality.mybigcommerce.com...
