Patio step carpet

Our deck and steps are covered with a berber type of carpet. The bottom step has a spot on it now that is rotting (and getting bigger) and the bare wood underneath is exposed. How can this be repaired on a shoestring budget. I don't want the stair to rot when it starts to rain in the fall. This spot is the only one

Remove the carpet on the bottom step and replace rotten board.I would then paint it a contrasting color so your visitors will see that it is another step.

If the wood is still good, remove the carpet and prime the steps real well..real well...then paint the steps (whatever color) and sprinkle white sand on the steps while the paint is still wet to give you traction. Indoor/outdoor carpet will actually retain water and rot the steps much faster.

    I. think I would take all the carpet off the stairs and clean and prime all the stairs,Be sure to use white sand over wet paint. Its not that expensive.Good Luck!

You can also purchase some of those black sanded traction strips. They are peel and stick and the contrasting color is helpful to older people with fading eyesight.
