This room needs to be lighter, more serene. The walls are painted honey colored, the book shelves are dark and the window has white wood shutters. any suggestions?

  • Making small rooms seem larger can be a lot of fun. There are so many options though. Before I answer the question could you provide a little more information or a picture? What does your budget look like? Are you going to hire a contractor, or would you like DIY only options? What style do you prefer? Is it possible to enlarge the window? Are the bookshelves built-in, or can they be moved? I think I may be able to help if you have the time.

Even with a tight budget, paint can go a long way. Also mirrors. I take it the book shelves are built ins. If you want to keep the original finish (on the book shelves) suggest adhereing decorated posterboard to the backs, and leave only a few items in them. Full shelving look heavy and uninviting. What kind of flooring is in the room? If carpet do you like the carpet color? If so use that color as the start of your color pallet. Hope you will post px's with your progress.

Great, thanks for your help. I'm only able to embrace the DIY ideas, paying off my new brn wood laminate floors. I like a combination of industrial and antique, the window size is permanent and the bookshelves can be moved, I like the bed under the window for sleeping. I'm sure u charge a well deserved fee, what is it?

@Nancee, if you can share some photos, you'll get a whole lot more answers. Hometalk members are great with ideas, but few will reply without a photo to grab their attention. I agree with Colleen's idea of backing your shelves with a light colored paper. In your situation, I'd suggest it match the wall color. Another idea, I recently shared was to turn books backward so the pages show. That keeps the appearance of "space", whereas multi colored book covers fills the space. In the photos below you'll see the difference this little idea makes. I placed the books by author in alphabetical order, took pictures, and then turned them around. I can easily find what I need by checking out the pictures first. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/-3865219

Lose the dark bookshelves. They probably take up valuable space and close in the room. Would make room for a small night table.and bedside lamp - or make room for one of those swing lamps that have a metal rod attached to the wall. Wooden shutters are heavy looking. Maybe mini-slat blinds (cheap) and soft sheers (look at thrift shops) would also lighten the room. Keep the honey colour if you like it - all sorts of pastels go with it as in floral bedspread, etc.
