Living room wall

Jeanette S on Jul 09, 2014That is a beautiful chest but it needs a companion. A pretty chair would look nice sitting there next to the chest. Even a odd wooden kitchen type chair would work. Look around and see what you have you can use. If you like a lot of activity, a few more things in a grouping next to the picture would be nice...a small shelf? An old rusty key? And perhaps set a small basket with magazines in it next to the chair. Anything that you find interesting. Please send a photo of the finished product.Helpful Reply

Donna Byram on Jul 09, 2014Beautiful chest, but I feel it is too small for the area. It needs to be taller and longer. I would utilize all the area between the vent and to within a foot of the edge of the carpet. You could use an old dresser or a sofa table. You could still use your lamp, picture and decor, plus some candle holders or vases. Here is a few examples I found. Hope this helps.Helpful Reply

Becky Wood on Jul 09, 2014some sort of entry table, a bench, mirror(s), photos or art work, wall sconces...there are tones of things you could do. Do a search on this website and Pinterest. You will see loads of ideas.Helpful Reply

Marcia Casebolt Thomas on Jul 09, 2014i agree with all the comments above. It is a beautiful chest, but I feel you could probably find a better spot for it. Go with something larger there....even an armoire would be great!! And who couldn't use the extra storage that would provide?Helpful Reply

Moxie on Jul 09, 2014What a great space! Many people don't like high ceiling areas I can only dream of! I think this wall is telling you to welcome your guests. What do you want people to think when they first arrive in your home? What would hint and flow into the rest of your home design? If it was mine, I would probably stencil the wall for an accent background and then mount things that I really like on the wall such as wooden boxes to be like shelves with special items on them, favorite word/sayings signs, great family photos and probably work in a storage space for those things everybody likes to drop just inside the door (coats/hats,etc)...I think if you add interest to the wall with parts of you and your family...the chest will nestle in a ground the display. Just my thoughts. Nice thing is you can always change things up.Helpful Reply

My Ideal Mess on Jul 11, 2014I would center a mirror in the middle of the wall and under it place a bench with a back, you can have storage in the bench, plus this could be a lovely place to sit and put on shoes or an extra seating area!Helpful Reply

Joan on Jul 11, 2014It appears that this beautiful piece of furniture is too low for the space. (Lights witch on the wall?). If you place something taller under the existing picture and perhaps a side chair for all those things going out the door, you will be happier. Experiment with things you have...such as a dining chair and maybe a bedroom chest to see the proportions then you will have a better idea of proportionate size.Helpful Reply

Tris Smith on Jul 11, 2014Put a chair in the corner with a floor lamp. Add more pictures or shelves. Move the table closer to the chair. If you get a floor lamp, remove the lamp on the table.Helpful Reply

Joffler on Jul 11, 2014That space seems perfect for a HALL TREE since it appears to be at the foot of the stairs and right by the front door. The hall tree would be an object of visual interest, would be appropriately scaled for the space and ceiling height and would be something that serves the family well. There are some reasonably priced ones at wayfair.com (my favorite is the Bermuda--pictured below) and, of course, you might enjoy hunting down a vintage or antique hall tree.Helpful Reply

Mary on Jul 11, 2014It looks like the entry door is on the right due to the change in flooring. If you don't have a coat closet an armoire would look nice and you could hang your artwork one the side with a bench or chair beneath the artwork or I would use a larger mirror instead. I like hall trees by a back door and prefer hidden storage in living rooms. I am sure whatever you do it will be great. Just keep scale and balance in mind. Have fun!Helpful Reply

Jan Varga on Jul 11, 2014Well, I have questions for you! Do you want to keep the pieces that are pictured? Is there some reason for NOT centering them on the wall? Do you want to purchase new pieces - larger? Do you like to buy a used item and make it your own? Do you need this space to be useful? Enough questions?!!!Helpful Reply

Penny Anthony on Jul 11, 2014A large (long) sideboard would be nice and would offer storage as well. It could be a "find" that you paint or a finer piece to be used in a large dinning room later. It can be used to serve a buffet if you want to use it that way for a special occasion. A large mirror with art works placed around and above it would be classy! A sideboard would also hold a large flatscreen if necessary....versatile piece of furniture! Do the unexpected....even a collection of plates and platters would be nice on wall.Helpful Reply

Rita H on Jul 11, 2014A nice wooden tall bookcase would be nice with a large peace lily that doesn't need a lot of sun light.Helpful Reply

Pat on Jul 11, 2014Center the chest with the rug..(move it over to the right). Hang the picture over the chest but lower....lower part of picture a couple of inches lower than the bottom part of the lamp shade. The picture is really too big but is a nice color with the chest and lamp. Then I would put a tall plant on the floor...right side where the light is (door side?) to balance it all. Love the chest.Helpful Reply

Debra D on Jul 11, 2014What everyone is telling you is that the scale is off on that wall. The pieces feel wrong because they are too small. A small upholstered chair and a tall tree behind it on the right would make it feel cozier and more welcoming, but it would feel better in there if you can make the most of the height of the space. Even centering what you have and adding large candle sconces on either side of the picture would help. Good luck!Helpful Reply

Barbara Turner on Jul 11, 2014Faux or real fireplace hearth would be nice. Then put a fitting picture above it with plants either on one side or both sides. New paint would also be good here.Helpful Reply

Dee Hudson on Jul 12, 2014To make the wall outstanding I would place a large mirror leaning against flanked by two easy chairs and a lamp in between which would reflect on the mirror. To the right of it close to the window I would hang two decorative plates in rich colors.Helpful Reply

Lucky on Jul 12, 2014I think I would just move the chest to the right, close to where the carpet stops. Then maybe add a small ladder back chair under the painting, If that seems enough, great, if not maybe add a small piece of iron wall art above the chest, for more texture.Helpful Reply

Jody Lange on Sep 07, 2014On the side where there is nothing go to Wal-Mart or Menards and buy a tree that sticks to your wall in black about 20.00..You'll be surprised at how your wall will pop and people will comment on it I have one in my office people love it.Helpful Reply

Lori on Dec 27, 2014I love that chest and the picture only compliments it but unfortunately it's only decorating the lower left portion of the wall, which I assume you already know, hence the "help". Since that is all the wall you show we have to assume that is all of the wall you need help with. What about a lovely sofa table there with two tall buffet lamps, one on each end and then center the picture between the lamps.Helpful Reply

L on Dec 27, 2014The only change that would be necessary, if you do not want to add other items on that wall, or floor, is to, move the picture to the right, and down lower. Would look more pleasing to the eye, without adding other items you might not be in need of at this time. Down the road, can always add the additional suggestions that you have already been given. Curious, what you did to this wall, after posting it last summer?Helpful Reply

Denise on Aug 09, 2015I would get a large piece of art, whether famed poster or metal art, etc. I would center a console table under it, add a cute lamp, a pretty bowl for keys, some homemade bottle art, maybe an ornate umbrella stand next to it. With the 2 main pieces, youve filled up that huge space.Helpful Reply
