What to do with old unfinished flooring?

We live in a very old house and just recently pulled up some old wool carpeting. Under we found 3" unfinished hardwood. We love the look, want to keep it but are unsure what to do. All I would like to do is put some sort of protector on to enable us to keep floor clean. We don't have alot to spend so would really appreciate some low cost suggestions.

You could sand it and put on some heavy-duty polyurethane.

thanks, we have discussed that and that seems like a lot of elbow grease that we just don't have anymore. Guess I was looking for an easier solution, although your plan would probably be the longer better lasting.

If you just sand the rough or splintery spots and dust and clean it well, you can apply the coating with a new mop rather than brushing it on. Shouldn't be much harder than mopping the floor. It probably won't look professional if you don't sand the whole thing, but it will protect it so dirt doesn't get ground into the wood. Or you could use a tung oil based finish the same way.

The floor needs to be sanded, rent an orbital floor sander, and then apply your choice of finish

Al least get a quote to see how much to finish it. Most will give free quotes. But other than a magic fairy or what others have said. There is no easy way around it.
