What can I do to prevent further damage on my maple tree leaves?
-
The Garden Frog with C Renee on Jul 15, 2014How old is the tree? Are the leaves falling off? are there a few or the whole tree being affected? Any limbs dying? Maple trees are a pretty hardy tree and sometimes you get insects that will do this on any tree, shrub, or plant. Whenever a tree is losing leaves and looks like it is being attacked, I always first look at the base of the tree to see if there is any sawdust and/or weird looking sap, bugs, or holes. If not, and the leaves look like this I do not panic if they are still on the tree. If you feel like you are losing the tree you can spray for insects using insecticidal soap which is organic and more natural or use something stronger. I would not panic if it is only a few leaves and the tree is not looking distressed (like wilting or branches dying). I will watch for you and any more symptoms but for now this may be the work of a maple worm,or caterpillar which at this time in the season could be a tent caterpillar. Either way, look for caterpillars or worms and get a pic.Helpful Reply

Tina Krenz on Jul 19, 2014It's a fairly young tree, we just bought it last spring I think, and I haven't had a chance to look at the base of the tree yet to tell you, but when I do, I will let you know, so keep this posted in my e-mail until I get back so I won't forget to check,o.k.?Helpful Reply

Janet Pizaro on Aug 17, 2015Just wondering have you checked for worms, holes in bark etc. It definitely looks like an insect situation. Be careful what control you use many maples do not tolerate certain insecticides.Helpful Reply
