Hardwood floors

My house is over 100 years old and the floors are uneven. Is there a way to make them even so I can put down hardwood floors?

There are many methods of leveling floors. Each method is determined by the type of framing you have, how uneven the floors are, how large an area is uneven, and how much your willing to pay and deal with in doing the work. If the floor is simply pitched one way or the other, it may not be worth even trying. But if there are high and low areas that prevent any new hardwood or even laminate to be installed so it lays flat on the sub floor, you can use floor leveling cement, remove the sub floor and sister new joists that are level along side, jack up the low area. So what we need in order to give you a more precise answer is the following, Type of framing they used when building the house. Type of foundation, and what kind of floor do you have in basement. How many floor levels does the house have how much is the area out of level How large an area are you looking to fix what type of floor exists now. What type of floor are you looking to put down How handy are you.

With an old house, it usually comes down to time, energy, money! You really need to get a contractor experienced in old homes in to give you a good inspection and advice. I have see this done on the TV show "This Old House" but remember, those guys are real pros! Could a DIY person level floors? In some cases yes, in others it could be a matter of the foundation and not only almost impossible, but could be dangerous! You could require a LOT of equipment. An inspection and estimate should not be that costly. And they would want to check the attic to see if there is any stress showing on he beams up there. and remember...there will be surprises...all of which will cost money.
