DIY Fish Tail Impression

Tuna Tail Impressions are sold in local shops on the coast around here however they are way out of my price range. I decided to take a chance and ask one of the captains from Wicked Tuna if I could borrow or have one of his tuna tails to make one of these. He immediately said yes, so I went up to Gloucester, MA to meet Dave Marciano and pick the tail up.
Tail is 22 x 14
Supplies you will need.

Fish or Fish Tail (this tuna tail is from a tuna that went to market, Capt. Marciano keeps all the tails of the tuna he catches)

Rice Paper

News Paper

Brush and Paint or Ink
Put some news paper down on your surface to protect your table etc. I held the tail up and painted it using oil paint. The first go at this I used acrylic paint but it dried too fast before I could get the rice paper on it. You can also use ink for this. I held the tail up when painting to avoid getting paint on the newspaper which would have transferred to the rice paper. Put the rice paper over the tail and rub gently with your fingers to transfer the impression. Lift the rice paper up but don't let it fall back down or curl into itself. That's it! The oil paint took about 4 days to dry.
Once the print dried I took a cheap black plastic frame and painted it with white, brown and black paint to make it look like weathered wood.

Hope you will still read this since this is an old post. I once saw a documentary where Pablo Picasso did a similiar thing with a whole fish bone. So you are in good company.😄
