1 Garden, Many Composting Methods

Compost provides a wonderful, organic fertilizer for home gardeners and there are many methods to create it. Most gardeners tend to choose one and use it exclusively. However, a small homestead, especially one in the more northern, colder climates might have more success by using several different methods.
Vermicomposting or composting with red wigglers worms is a great way to keep organic matter breaking down in the cold winter months when many traditional outdoor piles tend to slow down in the freezing temperatures.
A traditional pile or even a compost bin works well during the summer months and helps keep fruit flies away from the worm bin that might be inside to prevent the worms from dying in the cold.
A tumbler helps break down organic matter quickly in that it’s easy to turn and generally the metal or plastic keeps the contents warmer
