Bears Breeches

MY Bears Breeches looked like it was dying with too many weeds and too much sun. I dug around him really good and added new soil and a little fertilizer and a huge umbrella to shelter him from the Western sun in afternoons. He still looks very sad but I have noticed little pups underneath it all. I have also learned he is planted in the wrong place as he needs some shade. What more can I do and when?
Bears Breeches in his alarming state. The stalks will grow up to 6 to 8 feet tall. This is an acanthus Mollis. Little pups are all at the base but I do not feel the plant should look this bad right now.
Bears Breeches after I cleaned his bed and added dirt. I will mulch him this evening. His leaves should be a dark shiny green. The blossoms on the tall stalks are purple and white.
