How to bring my 90's dinette set into the present?

These are the most comfortable swivel, tilt, roll, padded chairs and we practically live in them in the dining area of our kitchen. But I'm tired of the look. I love the trestle tables & the farm style tables with white turned legs & stained tops. What can I do to make these chairs go with one of those looks? I'm ok with having them upholstered & stained darker but what about the "sunray" arms?

Why not two tone the arms and sunray? Do the arms in the stain to match the table you want and then paint the rays white to go with the legs. If the rays aren't for support, you could cut them off and have a new look completely.

or you could cut them out and replace them with metal bars to make it less "woody" and more contemporary if you are going that direction. I'd think it would be important to match the style of your room ... you have wood baseboards and carpet, and dark carpet are those changing? What other colors are in the room. wood colors (oranges) are complimentary with blue so it will always stand out (as will white). If you want to minimize the base and other specifc parts, match the rug or go black or darker in another color. IF you go with painting or staining. I'd change the base from the 4 prongs to legs (ikea has very cost effective legs that are super easy to install if there is a flat surface underneath).

I would never remove the arms on these chairs. Heck, this looks like a chair to rear back in and relax after a good meal! It is a matter of taste. Pick out your table and stain/paint the chairs to match....or use an accent color! Recover them since the fabric is dated. I can see a black table, chairs painted black and a white and black leaf pattern fabric! Set the table on an synthetic (does not spot) white rug.

These chairs look very comfy. If you have ever wanted to try fabric painting, now could be the time. I would take a photo and talk to your upholsterer to see if the arms could be removed or changed. If not, I bet they could upholster right over them. They likely have some design ideas to change up the look.

I like the arms! I would just reupholster or slipcover the chairs. You probably won't find any that you like better!

Since you want the farm table look and if you want the top stained and the bottom painted.. I would remove the seat and change fabric.. or use the Anne Sloan Chalk paint you can find instructions on Pinterest how to paint the fabric. I saw some recently and they had also stenciled Faith Hope Love.. what's the 4th one? lol anyways... I would get some wooden Victorian pieces, you know the porch looking stuff lol and add a small piece between the sun rays or a solid decorative cut out on top at the base. .Another option would be a dowel rod with wooden beads spaced and glued..once assembled with wood.. I would either paint the entire frame white. or all but the stained arms..
