what is the best and easiest way to drill holes in terra cotta pots, and inexpensive?

Walter Reeves on Jun 26, 2012I use a carbide masonry bit and go REAL SLOW without much pressure. Figure out a way to support the pot under the drill hole so the back side of the clay doesn't suddenly pop out under pressure. Lubricate the drill hole with water as you workHelpful Reply

Liz C on Jun 27, 2012Im not handy in the slightest but my husband bought me a basic, smaller sized "Girly" drill bc I asked for one....So it's not really the drill you have but the special "BITS" you would need to attach to your drill, so you can drill through terra cotta. As for the specific type of bit...again, my husband bought those for me as well, for the same exact reason, so I'm unsure of what exact bits to ask for....But I'm sure if you ask ANY guy, they will know! And actually as for a drill...I would look on Amazon and/or ebay...you could probably find a better deal than Home Depot or those other big chain hardware stores!Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jun 27, 2012The drill bit you need is sold at your local hardware store and big box stores for around $3.00 Its a masonry bit. The drill you would want to purchase depends upon what other types of projects your looking to do in the future. HD sells some inexpensive battery drills that would work fine for this type of project and other drilling projects needed around a home. One suggestion however. The more you spend on a drill the better it is at doing other larger projects. So if you find that your doing more and more projects, this is one type of a tool you do not want to skimp on with price. Here is one from HD that I use all the time. In fact I have four of them. http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardware-Power-Tools-Drills-Cordless/h_d1/N-5yc1vZc2ci/R-202217724/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jun 29, 2012Dremmel makes drill bits for tile. Those would work fine, only the holes will be quite small. But using a tile cutting tip you would be able to make the holes larger.Helpful Reply
