Cheap and Easy Lacy Wall Trellis

I was given some hops as a gift and couldn't wait to plant them on the corner of our garage and patio. The first year I settled for some twine and a nail for them to climb on. Not fancy but functional. I had seen a photo of old rusty wire garden edging hung upside down as a porch accent and thought that would be a perfect solution. Only, since I really wanted some, there wasn't any rusty wire edging to be found. On to plan B. New wire garden fencing in a pretty white.
Pretty lacy wire trellis ready for hops.
I love the little white accent. Looks like a little bit of lace trim on our beautiful Rosehaven. And it's the closest thing to gingerbread trim that my husband would agree to!
Rolled wire garden edging.
We found the edging at our local garden supply store. It was 20' long and about 12" tall. And just under $9. We live just inland from the central Oregon Coast so the fact that this was also coated in plastic was a plus. Though I'm a huge fan of rusty things, I like that this won't discolor the wall of the garage and will last much longer than if it wasn't coated.
We measured the area that we wanted the trellis to hang and used a pair of wire cutters to cut it to length.
We tucked the ends that would normally be stuck in the dirt up next to our trim board and used galvanized fence staples to hold it in place. The trellis itself isn't heavy, but we did put a few more staples in to make sure that it would hold the weight of my climbing hops. Check the link below for the full story...
