Beneficial insects can be very effective when it comes to pest control in the garden.

I try to plant enough to be able to share my bounty with neighbors and pesky critters included.

Avoid applying non-selective, toxic chemicals and watch the natural preditors "duke it out"!

Travis, it's especially fun to discover praying mantis and other exotic looking creatures in one's garden

I haven't seen a Praying Mantis yet, but I hope this one is beneficial.
    • Hope it's friendly.

I won't put anything on my garden and even if the bad insects do rise up in revolt the good ones always come in and push them down. That is the natural cycle and we should not mess with it. Of course you have to be willing to accept food that is not always picture perfect. But then again I don't care what it looks like as long as it tastes good and is healthy too.

I can handle the bad bugs on anything except my roses. For them, I cave in and use the bayer 3 in 1.

I am always thrilled to see "our' praying mantis on the front window. I thought this was a cool picture until I showed it to the head of my fellow Forsyth County Master Gardeners. Jan said that the praying mantis will take down the hummingbird every time, and will eat it. I knocked it off, only to find it back in place a bit later. I then moved it to the front, where it happily stayed and ate the bad guys.
