Hi Elizabeth! I saw a post on here recently about someone who painted their floors and then stenciled them. I'll try to find it for you so you can check it out. I'm considering it for a bathroom floor, actually. Found it. She gives the product she used, too. There are also checkerboard patterns on here that some have done, too. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/paint/rooms/diy-painted-and-stenciled-linoleum-floor-2555012

Sheet vinyl is probably the least expensive, except for painting or paper bag floors. If you can get stick-on tiles on sale, they can be inexpensive and they are easy to install yourself.

Rip up the floor. If there is a wood floor with boards below you can sand it and stain, then add a coat of polyurethane. Could cost you less then $100. If no boards beneath that is when costs of supplies increase. Get a flooring expert to come in and give you advice.

I love how the paper bag floors look! Cost savings, but probably time consuming! Google them, they look great!

I have a really ugly kitchen floor so we removed the linoleum and were left with even worse looking plywood subflooring. I am currently glueing brown wall liner (similar to brown paper bags but thicker) onto my kitchen floor. I bought brown wall liner paper from Lowe's found in the paint department. It comes in large rolls and is easy to tear, glue and place on floor. When it is completely dry I will use a beige polymer paint to "stain" it then stencil a contrasting color on it before sealing with the polyurethane brand called Varathane floor finish. I am using Elmer's wood glue. It cost me $43 for the floor finish, $8 for the paper, $14 for the gallon of glue. Much less expensive than the cost of replacing the old linoleum with new linoleum, ceramic tile, or other floor materials. I paper bagged the hallway 7 months ago and it still looks beautiful.

Allure vinyl plank flooring at Home Depot - better than peel and stick tiles because they overlap and are waterproof. Several budget options. Hubby installed them in 2 bedrooms and it was easy. Wood look, tile look, you name it. Highly recommend. Have had a Shaw brand in our l-shaped living room and hall for several years now. Super easy to clean. AND get a few extra in case of accidents - easy to replace..

The cheapest easiest thing to do is to paint or stencil them. You will need to add several coats of non-yellowing polyurethane over the top. You could also buy some plywood and make wood floors from that: http://www.pinterest.com/mpsouthworth/plywood-floors/
