How do I re-install the tambours in my Hoosier cabinet?

I have them all reassembled with animal glue and fabric (those instructions were available on the web). However, I can't figure out how to get that assembly installed. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, I'm in Orange County, CA if anyone know a pro that can do this.

  • Normally the door is pushed up from the bottom of the cabinet opening. Unless you can some how work the door into the grove from the top, its the only way. The cabinet should be able to be removed with a few hidden screws. It also may be supporting the upper cabinets as well. This may be the job for a pro. Search for handyman cabinet contractors.

Thanks for the answers, but I'm still hoping for more ideas.
  • Without seeing the cabinet its impossible to provide you with any better answer. Can you provide one for us?

I appreciate your attempts to help. I'm thinking I need to find someone local that can do this for me. I know I've gone beyond what capabilities are at this point. Thank you for your help.

I guess no one can tell you how to fix a tambour door in a sellers Antique Hoosier Cabinet. Must not be able to be done !

Were you the one who took it apart? Probably not, but you would simply reverse the steps to put it back together. Best of luck, but likely you need someone who knows where there may be hidden screws and works with this type of cabinetry regularly.

Got it done. Turned out beautifully!

Did you do it, or have it done? I just bought an old hoosier cabinet and the tambour has come unseated from its track.

How did you remove them? That should give you a clue! Might have to disasemble the cabinet. I am siting infront of a desk with a tembour at the moment. Must say it would not be a favourite job to undertake. Might need a cabinet maker.

You should find if you take the back off the cabinet there is provision to slip the tambor in from there. That is the normal way to do it, and in just about all the tambored cabinets I've worked on, this is what I've found. This should apply whether the tambour runs vertically or horizontally.
