When do you know a watermelon is ripe to pick?
For years I have tried to grow watermelons and this year I finally have success. I have two melons that are really long but not overly fat yet. When will I know it is time to pick them?

Donna Byram on Aug 21, 2014Look at the tendril and spoon (the very small spoon shaped leaf) that grow closest to your melon--both will dry and turn brown when your watermelon is ripe. Also if you look at the spot on your melon where it rests on the ground, it will turn from white to cream or yellowish. If there is no spot, it is probably because your melon has rolled or been moved from the original resting spot.Helpful Reply

Adrianne C on Aug 23, 2014I thump them. The deeper the sound, the riper it is. It should sound hollow.Helpful Reply

Melissa Gutilla on Aug 23, 2014When you think they are ready wait a few more days! lol I looked at the tendrils on mine and the spots on the bottom plus plunked for the hollow sound. This year the first one I picked was perfect. The second did the same inspections but it was still white inside. The third one checked everything looked good and I decided to wait a few days on it and it was perfect. I've watched numerous videos etc and I still think it's a guessing game. Like you this is my first year actually getting any. Last year I had one but picked it to early. I still have 3 more left on the vine so I'm in the waiting game again. Tendrils have already fell off of those also. Good luck!Helpful Reply

Glad E Olah on Aug 24, 2014I did the thumping test and one sounded with an echo so I picked it. Tomorrow I will cut it open when the grands are here. I hope we will all have a delightful surprise. I will take a picture no matter what it looks like inside. As far as Jeanette's comment......I wish you had space for a garden. Have you tried growing in containers placed where there is sun? Some things do well in containers. Thanks for the comments everyone.Helpful Reply
