  • Hello Celeste, Do you have any sort of sealer on the wood? Using a good wood sealer will help to prevent things like the mold from growing, plus protect the wood from the sun and weather.

I put some sort of water resistant stuff on it from Menards, and it makes the water bead up on it... but still getting the mold or whatever.

I would use and oil base sealer it will penetrate better than water based sealer.

Can I now put it OVER the water based sealer?

No the water base needs to be removed before you use the oil based type. Aldon Premium Stripper will remove waxes, soap residues, etc. in addition to the sealer. It also removes bad stains in the stripping process so this should cure the mold spots as well.

Hudson has it right...the old water based product needs to be stripped or sanded. I have been using the line of strippers, cleaners and brighteners from Penofin. As well has their oil based finish. A few years ago I was getting a little dark residue in the corners of my deck. Cleaner and brightener took care of it.
