After moving into our boring, builder grade home four months ago, I was bound and determine to find a way to add some charm and character to our family room/great room. I had seen lots of ideas about adding wood to walls, but then settled on a wood, tongue and groove plank wall after watching Fixer Upper on HGTV.
Before, builder grade wall. This wall is big, 10ft ceilings and the wall is 20ft wide. It was boring and lacked character. The shelves I purchased at IKEA as a temporary fix.
The boring fireplace before. The mantel was ho-hum and lacked character. Above the fireplace I had placed this antique mail sorter until I knew what to do with the huge open space above.
Plank wall all finished
The wall is easy to install and each piece fits together nicely. We installed the boards in an offset patters to insure we didn't have overly obvious seams. Then attached each board with a brad nailer into the studs.
This was a lot of work, but nothing difficult. Our 9 year old was a big help with the project as well!
New and improved fireplace. Wood planks added above the fireplace, along with strips of reclaimed wood I cut down to add around the frame. The mirror is an antique purchased at a yard sale.
I finished off the wall by filling in holes and caulking the edges. Then applied a coat of primer and 2 coats of Snowbound by Sherwin Williams in a satin finish.
We all love the new and improved family room!
