Turning an Inexpensive Flat Sheet Into a Tailored Custom Bedskirt

As someone whose sewing abilities are limited to a simple stitch in a (kinda) straight line, I never thought I'd be making my own bedskirt. But after striking out on finding a store-bought one that I liked and realizing that the blue polka dot flat sheet that I already had would look great with my daughter's duvet, plan "turning my polka dot flat sheet into a bedskirt" was born.
What convinced me to take the plunge is realizing that the finished edges around the flat sheet would work perfectly for the bottom edge of a bedskirt so there actually wasn't going to be that much sewing involved. Also, using a flat sheet was cheap and I loved that I would be able to throw it in the wash when needed.
It turned out to be a much simpler project than I ever would have expected and I LOVE how it looks!

I made the bedskirt by cutting five separate panels out of my flat sheet. I planned it out so that the finished edges of my sheet ended up as the bottom edges of my bedskirt panels. The top edges of the panels are hidden once the bedskirt is in place so they didn't need to be sewn. I ended up having to sew only three short straight lines and a couple of inches at the top of the simple box pleats that I added to the center of the foot and side panels. Once the panels were cut, sewn, and ironed, I simply added them to the box spring starting with the corner pieces, pinning them in place with straight pins as I went along.
The whole project was finished in less than two hours (with a big chunk of that time spent on the measuring, layout, and ironing). I can't imagine buying a pre-made bedskirt again not only because this was such an easy DIY but I love how the pinned panels don't shift around when you're changing the bedsheets - no more droopy bedskirts!

Great work! But what is that beautiful paint color on your daughter's walls?
I'm absolutely doing this but have a question about the measurements. I understand adding 5" to accommodate the pleat on the sides but why minus 2" for the foot of the bed? Won't it be too short at the ends after making the middle pleat? What am I missing?
