Barn Wood Horse Staining Titled "Avalyn"

This is a little different than what I usually do. Typically, I put my stained designs on pieces of furniture. This time, I wanted to try to make a true art piece... Using real barn wood. I have titled this "Avalyn" meaning Beautiful Breath of Life.
First- I went through my wood scrap pile and found the pieces I thought would work well. I cut them to size and then used scrap plywood to connect all three pieces. I screwed the plywood onto the barn wood. I also cleaned the wood up a bit. Then I was able to start the fun part!
This was the first step of staining completed. I just use the stain as you would paint. In this case I used Minwax's stain in Ebony.
Next, I was able to add more detail and "shading". It was starting to come to life at this point! I was getting pretty excited! Then I was able to do my favorite part-- the hair!
And there she is- "Avalyn" (Beautiful Breath of Life) - Ready to be hung and admired. I'm very happy with how this turned out. Especially since it was my first attempt at a 'true' art piece (and first time drawing a horse for that matter) :)

Jeanette S on Aug 30, 2014I don't know if you see it or not, but you have a "face within a face" a very unique technique! At the top left, there is the eye of a young woman peeking out! Amazing! I love it!
